Day 1 – A morning departure has you traveling to your overnight stop for lodging (pack an overnight bag); dinner is on your own this evening.
Day 2 – Following breakfast, check out and continue traveling into the gentile South and Savannah, GA. Upon arrival you will check into your hotel and freshen up for dinner at a local restaurant.
Day 3 – After breakfast, head for the Savannah Visitors Center where you will meet your guide for a 2-hour tour of one of the largest restored National Historic Landmark Districts in the nation. You will see restored 18th and 19th century buildings and the waterfront where cotton warehouses are now restaurants, hotels, and shops. This beautiful city eloquently displays exquisite ironwork, ancient cobblestones, splendid mansions and picturesque cottages. There will be time for lunch on your own at Old City Market, then visit the Savannah History Museum, housed in the old Central of Georgia Railway passenger shed and dating to the 1850s. The museum is now home to more than 10,000 artifacts including Forest Gump’s bench, one of Johnny Mercer’s Oscar Awards, and a carriage owned by the family of Girl Scouts founder, Juliette Gordon Lowe. You may also enjoy a film presentation of “Savannah the Survivor” in the theatre. A stop at Savannah’s River Street District will allow you time to browse the unique shops and enjoy dinner on your own at one of the fine restaurants.
Day 4 – Enjoy a leisurely breakfast before departing for nearby South Carolina and a guided tour of Historic Beaufort. Considered one of the most aristocratic cities in America before the Civil War, the “Queen of the Carolinas” is the picture of southern life with moss-draped trees, antebellum homes and quaint shops. It has also been used as a backdrop for such famous films as “Forest Gump”, “The Great Santini” and “The Big Chill”. There will be time for lunch your own in the downtown area, then head for Parris Island to visit the Parris Island Museum which details the long and rich legacy of the United States Marine Corps as well as the exciting history of the Port Royal region. Thousands of artifacts, images, and other materials illustrate the varied stories within the exhibit galleries from Native American to modern Marines. Returning to Savannah, you will enjoy a family-style dinner at Food Network personality, Paula Deen’s The Lady & Sons Restaurant, followed by a fantastic Musical Revue Show at the Savannah Theater. It’s 2 exciting hours of music, dance and comedy sure to be the highlight of your day.
Day 5 – Once again you will enjoy breakfast, then depart for the Golden Isles of Georgia. Arriving on St. Simons Island, you’ll meet your guide for a 2-hour tour. Your guide will lend insight into the history of the island, which was founded in the 1600’s by Spanish explorers with brief stops at Christ’s Church and Ft. Frederica. At the conclusion of your tour, you will have plenty of time to explore the quaint shops and eateries in St. Simons Island Village. In the afternoon, continue to historic Jekyll Island for a guided tour of this island whose history began in 1886 when it was purchased by a number of wealthy families to be used as a private winter retreat. This was the winter home of the Rockefellers, Morgans, and many more captains of industry. Their gathering place was the renowned Jekyll Island Club, and it was reputed that its membership represented over one-sixth of the world’s wealth during this time period. You are welcome to explore the Jekyll Island Club Hotel on your own after the tour. Dinner will be arranged in the area this evening before returning to Savannah.
Day 6 – Following breakfast, check out and travel to your last night of lodging (pack an overnight bag); dinner is on your own in the area.
Day 7 – After breakfast, check out and depart for home with fond memories of Savannah, Georgia’s Golden Isles & Beaufort!
